Snapchat is a well-known social media and messaging platform. It is, in fact, one of the fastest-growing in its category, but rivals such as TikTok are putting pressure on Snapchat. Aside from the social media wars, Snapchat has its own set of rules for displaying your relationships with other users.
As you may be aware, there is a set of emojis that indicate how close you are to someone. Snapchat emojis do reset, to answer your question right away. When and why, however, is a different matter. Continue reading to learn more about Snapchat emojis and their vibrant world.
101 Snapchat Emojis
The Snapchat algorithm for determining your besties and assigning emojis is fairly simple. Your best friends are the people with whom you interact the most. In other words, the more you snap at someone, the more likely you are to become their BFF.
If you and the other person are in the same group chat, the same rules apply. And there’s a standard set of emojis for expressing your level of commitment. Your best friends list could have up to eight users at any given time. Your BFF list may be empty if you don’t interact with your friends or only have a few.
What Do the Emojis Mean?
The Snapstreak is where it all begins. A fire emoji will appear next to a friend’s name if you and they snap at each other for a certain amount of time. If the streak is longer than 24 hours, the number of days is also displayed. That person may soon become your bestie, and a yellow heart emoji will appear next to his or her name.
After a two-week Snapstreak, the user becomes your BFF and a red heart emoticon appears. After two months of snapping, the person will be designated as a Super BFF and will receive a purple double heart emoji. However, the Snapstreak will end if you do not send a Snap within 24 hours. However, an hourglass icon will appear several hours before the 24-hour window expires, reminding you to send a Snap.
There are also three additional emojis: cake for a birthday, a grimacing face for having the same best friend as someone else, and an emoji with sunglasses for a mutual close friend.
How Frequently Do Emojis Reset?
To be honest, there’s no way of knowing for sure when Snapchat updates your best friends list and resets the emojis. If you’re a frequent user, it may appear that the list and emojis are constantly being reset, which is true in some ways.
Snapstreaks have a 24-hour expiration period, so their emojis are reset/updated daily. Of course, if you keep snapping at people, you can extend your streak. As a result, it’s safe to assume that the reset algorithm operates in real-time, updating your profile as soon as certain changes are detected. However, the story does not end here.
As previously stated, it takes two weeks of constant snapping for someone to become your BFF, and two months for the Super BFF badge. As a result, it appears that the emojis and best friends list are reset every 14 or 60 days. Furthermore, Snapchat examines your profile closely, and the number of interactions determines who is your bestie.
If you have thousands of friends and send a lot of messages on a daily basis, it takes a lot of snaps for the change to happen. This isn’t to say that the algorithm misses the changes; it simply takes longer to reset the emojis due to the higher number of interactions.
How do I see an Emoji preview?
Your best friends’ usernames and avatars are right next to the emojis. Launch Snapchat and select the speech bubble icon in the bottom-left corner of the screen. Now press the upper-right Send to the button.
Best friends are at the top of the list, with each having its own emoji. Take a photo, then tap the blue arrow (bottom right) to access the Friends section and see the emojis and besties list.
Make Your Own Friend Emojis
One of the coolest features is the ability to change or customize your friends’ emojis. For example, you can make a pizza slice out of the BFF’s red heart emoji. The method varies slightly between iPhone and Android, though the same emojis are available on both platforms. This is what you must do.
To access Settings, click the gear icon under My Profile. Swipe down and tap “Customize Emojis,” then let your imagination run wild before exiting.
You go back to My Profile and select Settings, but this time you swipe down to Additional Services and select Manage. In the next window, go to Friend Emojis and select the one you want to customize.
Finally, don’t be surprised if you wake up one day to discover that your list of best friends has shrunk significantly. It all depends on how you interact with others, and if you haven’t been snappy recently, expect a drop.
